Asthma and allergic rhinitis cases in the world

Currently, an estimated 235 million people of all ages and backgrounds are affected by asthma worldwide. And the number is constantly increasing.

There are more than 4 million asthmatics in France. It is the first chronic disease of the child. It is responsible for 600,000 days of hospitalization and 7 million lost work days per year.

According to the latest WHO (World Health Organization) estimates, published in December 2016, there were 383,000 deaths from asthma in 2005.

It is a non-contagious disease that occurs in all countries regardless of their level of development. The rate of asthma-related deaths is higher in countries where individuals have middle or low incomes.

What is allergic rhinitis?

More commonly known as " Hays Rhinitis ", allergic rhinitis is a seasonal allergy that is felt the most during pollination episodes.

It is characterized by symptoms such as tingling in the nose, sneezing, swollen, red and itchy eyes. It can be very disabling and the recurrence of pollination periods due to climate change means that some people suffer from allergic rhinitis all year round.

On the other hand, some allergies to dust mites, pet hair or chemicals create reactions for asthmatics.

Treatment for allergic rhinitis can help prevent the onset of asthma and improve the control of asthma symptoms.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a non-communicable disease that affects people of all ages. It is easily characterized by breathing difficulties and wheezing. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the bronchial tubes (ducts that allow air to pass into the lungs).

It manifests itself by daily discomfort or by crises, characterized by breathing difficulties (breathlessness, wheezing, coughing and chest tightness). These symptoms can be relatively severe and can even be life-threatening for people with asthma. The people concerned are affected several times a day, a week and the symptoms are more or less disabling at the time of a physical effort, important pics of pollution or during a sleep phase.

This disease is the result of the interaction of the individual's genes with environmental factors such as respiratory allergies (dust mites, pollens, molds, animal hair), viral infections and bronchial irritants (chemicals, pollution, tobacco).

The first signs of a person prone to asthma are rather discrete:

  • Tingling and scratchy feeling in the throat ;
  • Runny nose ;
  • Frequent sneezing ;
  • Dry cough.

Symptoms of an asthma attack can be recognized by : Shortness of breath, wheezing, a dry and then a wet cough, chest tightness.

People with asthma are often affected by pollen-related allergies or hay fever. A family history, an allergic background or repeated bronchiolitis during childhood can also lead to asthma.

Asthma can be treated with doctor-prescribed medication, antihistamines and prevention of risk factors such as exposure to allergens or pollution.
