AIR ET SANTÉ gives you 7 tips to clean up your home

The aim of AIR AND HEALTH is to help you improve the quality of your indoor air so that you can improve your breathing daily. But from now on it is important to know the good practices to clean your home, in addition to the use of an air purifier.

1. AERATION

In order to properly renew your air, aerate your home at least once a day for 15 minutes all year long, preferably in the morning and evening when human activities are slow.

When you do certain activities such as cleaning, cooking or DIY, it is also recommended to systematically open your windows. These activities are sources of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and are very polluting. Moreover, when you do DIY, it is advisable to wear a protective mask.

2. VENTILATION

The ventilation system in your home allows you to renew the indoor air and limit the proliferation of dust, mold, bacteria and pollutants. It is therefore important to regularly check the condition of your system.

Thus, the air vents as well as the VMC (controlled mechanical ventilation) must not be obstructed and need to be cleaned and checked regularly.

3. HUMIDITY

Keep an eye on the humidity level in your home, it should range between 40% and 60%.

An air too humid or a water leak will favor the development of molds, potentially allergenic. If mold appears in your home, it is necessary to find its origin. If it is a leak, repair it as soon as possible and clean the contaminated surface.

On the other hand, an air that is too dry favors the proliferation of dust and can cause respiratory discomfort. In this case, the use of a humidifier is recommended.

4. SCENTED PRODUCTS

Some products such as home fragrances, air fresheners or essential oil-based products promise to clean your home. However, they are sources of pollutants in disguise. In fact, they pollute your air more than they purify it.

Harmful to your breathing system, scented products emit toxic and allergenic substances, so limit them.

Similarly, avoid burning products such as scented candles and incense, which emit carbon monoxide, fine particles and volatile organic compounds.

5. CLEANING PRODUCTS

The classic cleaning products we use are for the most part toxic and allergenic. It is therefore necessary to reduce them as much as possible and avoid overdosing or mixing them, which can cause chemical fumes in the air.

Choose eco-labelled products, which limit the presence of toxic substances and are less harmful to your health. It is even preferable to use natural products such as white vinegar, baking soda or black soap to clean your home.

6. HEATING

Make sure that your combustion appliances (heating, water heaters...) are maintained regularly and are working properly. Old or defective appliances emit high quantities of pollutants such as carbon monoxide, fine particles or nitrogen oxides... and can cause very serious health problems.

Choose eco-labelled products, which limit the amount of toxic substances and are less harmful to your health. It is even preferable to use natural products such as white vinegar, baking soda or black soap to clean your home.

7. TABACCO

First and foremost, it is recommended not to smoke indoors.

Tobacco smoke contains harmful substances from combustion, which once suspended in the indoor air, can be inhaled by everyone inside the room for several hours.

However, if someone smokes inside or at the window, it is necessary to air the room properly afterwards.

Now you know how to sanitize your home with the right gestures and good practices on a daily basis.
